SCCA Presentation

         SCCA Top Club 2007

A marvelous turnout of over 80 riders and supporters came along to the SCCA Presentation Ceremony on November 11th, many via their club runs on a day where a soaking was more or less guaranteed. The event got off to a great start with an ample and well received supply of hot food courtesy of the Wrekinsport Ladies crew, with Deb, Lesley and Tina knocking out a great range including bacon sarnies and jacket potatoes and Di keeping the queue in order!

                        Wrekinsport Ladies
The club was well represented on two fronts, with many club members winning medals and also celebrating becoming Top Club for the second year running.

Bason Takes Podium Spot at National 50

Andy Bason pulled a rabbit out of the hat on Saturday (21/6/08) with an astounding personal best in foul conditions to take the runner-up spot from a full field of 120 competitors in the National 50. Battling through heavy rain and wind throughout, Wrekinsport’s star rider finished in 1:44:26, averaging over 28.7mph along the way as he sliced 2:42 off his previous mark.
Bason was pleased to improve on his 5th spot in 2007 and was only beaten by defending champion Michael Hutchinson, who took a record 9th consecutive victory in this annual event. He shocked some of the biggest names on the National scene as he held the number one spot on the leader board from the un-seeded 93rd start position for over 90 minutes.
Held over two laps of the A168 and A19 Thirsk by-pass between Dishforth and Knayton in North Yorkshire, Bason was glad of support from employers Doncasters of Shrewsbury, who loaned him a works van for the long trip, and he now has eyes on a tilt at the National 100 Championship to be held in South Wales in July.

Top 10:
1 Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit RT) 1:40:37; 2 Andy Bason (Wrekinsport CC) 1:44:26; 3 Ben Instone (www.scientific-coaching.com) 1:44:33; 4 Julian Ramsbottom (De Rosa RT) 1:44:36; 5 Richard Prebble (GS Strada) 1:44:44; 6 Mark Holton (Probikekit.com) 1:45:07; 7 Kevin Dawson (Sportscover Spuik) 1:45:20; 8 Ian Cammish (Planet X) 1:45:29; 9 Mark Lovatt (Planet X) 1:45:46; 10 Phill Sykes (VC St Raphael) 1:45:47

Wrekinsport Club 10 mile Time Trial No.6 2008
An unexpected return to The Gate at Bratton circuit allowed riders to take advantage of a good deal of new, smooth tarmac around the course in round 6 of the Wrekinsport Evening 10 Series – with Dave Gostelow taking another victory. Gostelow improved on his round 5 time by 33 seconds to take a comfortable win by a margin of 42 seconds and has now established himself as one of the club’s fastest riders.
A first club 10 of the season saw triathlete Mark Griffiths just edge it in a close battle for the runner-up spot with Ged Kennedy. Griffiths has been concentrating on the swimming discipline during spring, but the extra fitness gained saw him stop the clock on 23:55, with Kennedy a further three seconds back after putting in a great effort.
Although a northerly wind made life difficult for some on the long three-mile stretch to Crudgington fast returns from Cotwell Bank were assured, with Rob Crawford benefiting most of all thanks to a new disc wheel. Crawford knocked a huge 2:29 from his round 5 time to finish 12th in 26:57 - more than double that of Kennedy who gained 1:06 - as he begins to show signs of recovering from his recent exertions in the London Marathon.
New member Melissa Thomas took the honours for the ladies, coming home in 28:39, which was 3:13 better than runner-up Alison Lamputt.

Wrekinsport Club 10 mile Time Trial No.7 2008
There was a quick return to the Waters Upton – Hodnet course for the 7th round of the Wrekinsport Club series – with another fine ride from Andy Bason, who just can’t stop winnig. Bason powered home in 21:24 for a comfortable victory of 2:20 over his nearest challenger as he honed his form for a tilt at the National 50 title at Thirsk this Saturday.
That margin was gained over Dave Gostelow, who knew he was in for a race with Mark Griffiths making his second appearance of the season. The battle between these two riders was a close-fought one, with Gostelow just edging out his younger rival by 10 seconds in a contest that is sure to run for the rest of the season.
Heavy rain beginning just before the event coupled with a keen south-westerly wind affected entries, but made for fast ‘out’ legs for those who braved a soaking, with riders forced to battle their way back from Hodnet. Adrian Cotton, who finished 4th coped best of all as he made the best of only three gains on the night over his round 6 time, stopping the clock on 25:10 to improve by 17 seconds.
Just one lady defied conditions, with Alison Lamputt coming home in 32:59.

Shropshire Championship 25
Another day, another county title as the relentless march of Andy Bason goes on. Wrekinsport’s star rider set the standard in round 7 of the Hawk Plant Shropshire Championship Points Series, the Friction and Hydraulic Services Shropshire Championship 25 on a new version of the Edgebolton – Tern Hill – Prees course brought into play for the first time since 1999. His excellent time of 53:32 on a rolling course and in windy conditions was 3:20 clear of nearest challenger Dave Griffiths, as the Paramount rider took home the silver medal as consolation. Bason retained the Freeston Trophy and extended his series lead to 140 points as a result of this ride and will be hard to catch.
There was a great effort by Andy Tamplin to squeeze out team mate Dave Gostelow by 24 seconds in the fight for bronze, with Tamplin stopping the clock on 58:23. With three Wrekinsport riders in the top four they took home Team Gold in a combined 2:50:42 – and helped to extend the club’s Top Club Award lead by a further 85 points from Paramount despite the efforts of Huw Roberts who put in a fine ride of 59:16 to capture 5th. Roberts currently holds 3rd place in the series, but is looking over his shoulder with Gostelow homing in just 10 points behind and this should be one to watch.
There was another amazing performance for Mid Shropshire Wheeler Dennis Milsom in the Hawk Plant Veterans Series as he took Veterans Gold by a huge margin. The 80-year old chalked up +23:15, a comfortable 6:50 clear of Veteran’s leader Pete Griffin despite the Newport rider’s excellent +16:25 which would have been good enough to win on many-a-day. Griffin was consoled by extending his series lead to 50 points over bronze medallist Allan Jones, who snaffled that award by just nine seconds from Ludlow’s Pete Ding with +13:52. The battle between these two looks set to continue for the rest of the season as they lie in 2nd and 3rd spots in the series respectively – and just 15 points apart.
Mid Shropshire Wheeler Julie Moore fought back after nearly being usurped by team mate Jenny York in the Championship 10 a week earlier and dug deep to capture Ladies Gold. Moore pulled out a fine ride of 1:06:55 to beat York by 1:29 and capture 25th spot overall. Despite this York is enjoying some of the form of her life and extended her lead in the Ladies Series to 35 points over Oswestry’s Helen Tudor in what is the closest-run Championship this year. Tudor finished in the bronze medal position in 1:16:33 but holds on to her 2nd spot in this series.
There was just one junior entry, with 15-year old Ryan Ordidge taking home Junior Gold and extending his Junior Series lead to 140 points as a result after finishing in 1:13:17.
