ROAD RACING

Road racing is easily accessible almost year round, although the bulk of events are between March and September. The majority of events are sanctioned by British Cycling (BC) and recognised by the world governing body, the Union Cyclist International (UCI) and conform to its regulations. The League of Veteran Cyclists and The League International also run events in the UK.

Road races are run on a category system, fourth category for beginners through third, second, first, and elite. Riders move up the categories by winning points that are awarded according to their finishing position in a race. The longer the race the more points are awarded.

Shropshire and South Staffordshire Road Race League (May-July)
The SSSCRRL’s main aim is to put on a series of Thursday evening road races of around 35 miles designed on a handicap basis. Many clubs from the two counties take part, and with all categories of rider catered for this increases the level of competition. Depending on the number of riders, three or four groups are set off at time gaps dependant upon the circuit being used and normally dependant upon ability, with the aim that groups will work well together to try to catch the group in front – or to stay away if possible.
The distances covered means that British Cycling points are awarded, giving riders a chance to move up the categories, as well as league handicap points for riders of SSSCRRL affiliated Clubs. Club affiliation is £5. Riders must be a member of a club to participate and also possess a current British Cycling racing licence for insurance purposes.
For 2008 a series of 10 events will take place on consecutive Thursdays between 1st May and 3rd July, with each club taking turns to marshal their own event. Series entry is £70 for Seniors and £40 for Juniors, whilst entry-on the-line for Juniors costs £8. There is a change this year with no entry-on-the-line for other categories.

Shropshire and South Staffordshire Cycle Road Race League: Event 1
The Shropshire and South Staffordshire Cycle Road Race League opened their 11 event season on the Knighton circuit with a good field of 63 riders competing in a 34 mile handicapped race. The handicapping produced a marvellously tight finish, with Paul Bailey of the Jeff Thomas Cancer Charity team out-sprinting a breakaway group of 9 riders to take the victory in 1:26:11, with riders from all four handicapped abilities represented in the top 10.
Sweeping along a chasing bunch of 41 riders, Richard Preece of Newport Shropshire CC just failed to catch the leading group, coming home 18 seconds off the pace.
Elsewhere there were a number of good performances, not least from Ironbridge’s Chris Cox, riding for the newly-established Bicycle Hub team after a 5 year absence from cycling to finish 7th, whilst Wrekinsport 16 year-old Lauren Bason had an eventful first ever road race, crashing in a bunch of four riders on the first of the 7 mile laps, bravely remounting to cross the line in 54th with the support of team mate Rob Jones.

Other County Road Races
There are a range of other road races taking place in the County throughout the year, with something on offer for youngsters through to Elite riders.
